Abernethy celebrated its' 40th Anniversary in 2011. Here's how the story began...
It was back in 1964 that the Abernethy Story really started. A Bible Class summer camp was held at Glenmore Lodge, the Scottish Sports Council Outdoor Centre in the Cairngorm Mountains under the agency of an organisation called ‘Crusaders’.
During that camp one of the leaders, Norman Walker, had a vision to set up a similar all-year-round residential centre but on strong Christian foundations, using the programmes, the facilities and the staffing who run it to impact thousands of young people who would come to visit as guests.
In 1971, four decades ago this year, Abernethy was established on a 30 acre estate in the village of Nethybridge, purchased for the princely sum of £18,500!
Since then, other centres have been gifted or loaned to the Abernethy Trust and now each year some 12,000 young people are influenced for good and for God through the ministry of the 125 strong team of fulltime Christian personnel operating the four centres.
Over these forty years the primary aim has not changed. Abernethy sees its prime task as reaching boys and girls, men and women, married’s and singles, groups and individuals, with the life changing good news of the Christian faith using the programmes we offer, the people who run them and the properties provided.
In 2011 we celebrated 40 years of God’s faithfulness in enabling Abernethy, throughout the ups and downs of four decades, to grow and develop, maintaining high standards and impacting the lives of both those who come as guests and those who serve on the staff teams.
And we are poised, ready for the next 40 with much being planned so that we can “Live the Adventure” together! But we definitely need YOU to be part of it.
