Abernethy Kilmalieu

Abernethy’s centre at Kilmalieu in on the Ardgour peninsular, a short hop over the Corran Ferry, near Fort William. It sits at the heart of a 3000-acre estate that includes mountains, coastline and woodland. Kilmalieu is a Christian retreat centre, where individuals and small groups come to pray and reflect amid rugged beauty and rich biodiversity. It is sometimes available for small self-catering groups of up to 18 people, an ideal base for retreat or outdoor activities. Facilities include a chapel, art room, lounge, library, drying room, a secluded bothy, sports hall, games room and gym.

Many of the themed retreats on offer involve activities that both deepen faith and connect with nature. Some of these provide opportunities for guests to be involved in the work of nature conservation and restoration. Visitors to Kilmalieu can expect to see two species of eagle, otters, some of the UK’s scarcest butterflies and fragments of ancient rain forest with some of the world’s rarest mosses, liverworts and lichens.

Abernethy Barcaple

Abernethy Barcaple is located in a secluded setting in the rolling hills of Dumfries and Galloway near Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbright. The centre is less than 2 hours from Glasgow, Carlisle and Ayr and offers easy access to the 7stanes bike trails of Kirroughtree, Dalbeattie, Mabie and Ae. Loch Ken is within easy reach, as are the magnificent beaches of the Solway coast.

Abernethy Barcaple’s Sports Barn and indoor Climbing Wall was completed in early 2020 adding a modern facility to our offer. It houses an indoor sports area for Basketball, badminton and football as well as accessible showers and toilets for users. The highlight of the project is the indoor climbing wall which has been enthusiastically received by guests and local mountaineering groups alike and of course our instructional Team!

This project would not have been possible without the generous legacy of Mason and Nora Porter who supported Barcaple with their finances and prayers over many years. Other contributions also enabled Abernethy to realise this amazing facility and our thanks go out to; DG LEADER, Sportscotland, FCC Communities Foundation, Mary Brown Trust, All Churches Trust and other donors who wished to remain anonymous.
