Outdoor Education
A Curriculum for Excellence

Abernethy has over 38 years experience supporting mainstream education providers, enhancing and extending curriculum opportunities by providing excellent outdoor learning opportunities

We continue to be in a strong position to lead development in education outside the classroom. Many of our senior staff have Qualified Teacher Status and are highly experienced in providing outdoor education and adventurous activities.

Abernethy recognises the purposes and principles contained within ‘A Curriculum for Excellence’ and is committed to providing premium quality residential programmes that can help to develop the four capacities in every child and young person.

Successful Learners

By exposing children and young people to new environments, experiences and challenges they can develop as successful learners, learning independently and as a part of a group, linking and applying different kinds of learning in new situations and becoming open to new thinking and ideas. Our programmes help participants how to learn, thereby encouraging them to become truly successful learners.

Confident Individuals

Emphasising a sense of physical, mental and emotional well-being, the ethos at Abernethy is to encourage pupils to pursue healthy and active lifestyles engendering good relations with others and management of themselves as they live away from home and school. The children and young people are given opportunities to assess risk and make informed decisions, building success in different areas of activity and becoming confident individuals.

Responsible Citizens

We aim to create an atmosphere that emphasises personal responsibility and respect for others. As a charitable trust founded on Christian principles our aim is to develop a knowledge and understanding of Christianity and to recognise faith as an important expression of human experience. The opportunity exists to explore moral values and to develop skills in reflection, discernment and critical thinking, making informed choices, evaluations and decisions.

Effective Contributors

A residential activity week gives major opportunities to work in partnerships and teams, applying critical thinking in new contexts and taking initiative and leadership roles. Problem solving opportunities abound with emphasis on resilience and self-reliance enabling children and young people to communicate in different ways and in different settings.

Abernethy welcomes the opportunity to be a part of a unifying and wide ranging Curriculum for Excellence, working in partnerships and alongside schools and other education establishments in enabling all young people to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.
