Paddlesport Qualifications and Awards

Come and get your paddling qualifications with Abernethy.  We run a number of qualifications throughout the year at a range of levels.  As you scroll down the page the qualifications get more advanced. 

All of these are through British Canoeing unless otherwise noted, and a membership to your regional governing body is required.  ILA Scotland funding may be available if you are eligible.

Current Opportunities 

White Water Canoe Coach Assessment

Based at Abernethy Ardgour on Friday 01 November 2019.  The course costs £200 for the day with no accomodation included, but feel free to ask about accomodation when making an enquiry about the assessment. 

Paddlesport Instructor course

Based at Abernethy Ardeonaig on 28-29 November 2019.  The course costs £190, including 2 nights of accommodation.

Foundation Safety and Rescue Training

This 1 day course covers the training required to gain a Foundation Safety & Rescue certificate (FSRT).  The course is a pre-requsite for the Paddlesport Instructor and all subsequent courses.

Pre-requisites

  • Able to swim in normal paddling clothing suitable for the prevailing conditions
  • Boat-based candidates must also hold the Paddle Explore Award, 2 Star Award or be of equivalent ability due to the paddling environment and the boat control required to complete the course
  • Bank-based participants accessing the course are not required to hold a Personal Performance Award
  • A first aid certificate is not a pre-requisite. However holding a first aid certificate is strongly recommended

 

Paddlesport Instructor 

This 4 day course covers the training and assessment required to gain the certificate.  This qualifies you to run taster sessions in very sheltered water.  You will be certificated in one craft, but able to instruct a mixed fleet. 

Pre-requisites

 

  • Foundation Safety and Rescue training
  • Aged 14 or over
  • Home Nation Coach Registration (CR) Form
  • National Association membership 


White Water Safety and Rescue

This 2 day course covers the training and assessment required to gain the White Water Safety and Resuce certificate.  This qualification is necessary for the White Water Kayak Leader and Open Canoe Leader courses. 

Pre-requisites

  • Confident in your ability to paddle on grade 2 water
  • Be confident swimming in normal canoe clothing suitable for a moving water environment
  • Be a minimum of 16 years of age
 

Paddlesport Leader

The Paddlesport Leader award is for paddlers taking on formal leadership responsibilities in sheltered water environments.

Pre-requisites

  • Recognised 1-day First Aid certificate within last 3 years
  • Be a minimum of 16 years of age

 

The following qualifications are available at both Moderate Water and Advanced Water levels.  Please contact us for more information. 

White Water Kayak Leader

The White Water Kayak Leader course delivers the skill level required to lead a group of paddlers in appropriate locations, up to moderate white water conditions and to judge the conditions and the standard of the group and make appropriate decisions along with the need to modify plans as required.

Pre-requisites for the training

  • White Water Safety & Rescue Training
  • Recognised 2-day First Aid certificate within last 3 years
  • Be a minimum of 16 years of age

Pre-requisites for the assessment

  • White Water Kayak Leader training within previous 3 years
  • Recognised 2-day First Aid certificate within last 3 years

White Water Canoe Leader

The White Water OC1 Leader course delivers the skill level required to lead a group of paddlers in appropriate locations, up to moderate white water conditions and to judge the conditions and the standard of the group and make appropriate decisions along with the need to modify plans as required.

Pre-requisites for the training

  • White Water Safety & Rescue Training
  • Recognised 2-day First Aid certificate within last 3 years
  • Be a minimum of 16 years of age

Pre-requisites for the assessment

  • Open Canoe Leader training within previous 3 years
