Module 6: Summer Mountain Leader preparation and assessment

This 2 week module is for those who want to complete the Mountain Leader Award to be able to safely lead groups in the hills and includes a week of revision of techniques.  Based at the Abernethy School of Adventure Leadership on the shores of Loch Linnhe and a stone's throw from Ben Nevis and the Glencoe mountains there is no better location for some quality outdoor adventures!

The module will go over aspects of the assessment including micro nav, night nav, security on steep ground and river crossings.  Week two will consist of the ML assessment which includes a two night expedition and will assess all that is required to be able to operate safely in the hlls.

What previous experience do you need?

  • The Mountain Leader Award requires at least 40 logged quality mountain days as stipulated by Mountain Training, 20 of which need to have been completed after taking part in the ML Training.  

What special equipment will you need?

Ideally for your own comfort and convenience you will have full waterproofs, a ruck sack, walking boots, first aid kit and a map case and compass.  We can, however, provide all these and all other equipment required as part of the cost of the module.

What is included in the price?

The fee for this 2 week module is £920 all inclusive:

  • All coaching and use of equipment and transport for training for the duration of the module
  • All National Governing Body assessment fees
  • All food and accommodation in single sex bunk bedded rooms, possibly shared – participants should be aged 18 or over
On booking, you will be required to pay a non refundable deposit of £200 with the balance due 6 weeks before the start of the course.

How does the programme work?

Our experienced, qualified instructional team will deliver coaching to give you enough experience to take part in the assessment course listed above.  

A typical day will start with breakfast followed by a short daily meeting.  A full day of coaching or un-coached practice time will follow with a review of the day and dinner on return to the centre. During an NGB course, there may be evening input from the visiting coach.

Weekends are free time but it is expected that module participants will spend the time refining skills and taking some rest!

Abernethy operates 4 Christian adventure activity centres and a bunkhouse in Scotland along with a Swiss winter ski training base.  The School of Adventure Leadership is in its 20th year of operation and is home to our flagship one year fully residential Outdoor Instructor Training Course.  Module participants will be training alongside our residential students.
