Module 5: Rock Climbing Instructor preparation and assessment

This 6 day module is for those who want to complete the Rock Climbing Instructor award to be able to safely teach groups single pitch rock climbing.  Based at the Abernethy School of Adventure Leadership on the shores of Loch Linnhe and a stones throw from Ben Nevis and the Glencoe mountains there is no better location for some quality outdoor adventures!

The module will go over aspects of the assessment including personal climbing, safety and rescues through coached sessions, followed by a 1 day refresher with our assessor prior to the assessment.  The RCI assessment will complete the module.

What previous experience do you need?

  • You must have led a minimum of 40 graded rock climbs with traditional protection at a variety of venues (of which at least 20 must be at severe grade or above).
  • You must be proficient in the use of climbing walls and have a minimum of 30 climbing wall leads graded at F4 or above.
  • You must be proficient in outdoor bolt protected sport climbing and have a minimum of 10 sport climb leads graded at F4 or above

What special equipment will you need?

Ideally for your own comfort and convenience you will have full waterproofs, a day sack, climbing shoes, helmet, harness, climbing gear and a first aid kit.  We can, however,  provide all these and all other equipment required as part of the cost of the module.

What is included in the price?

The fee for this 6 day module is £450 all inclusive:  

  • All coaching and use of equipment and transport for training for the duration of the module
  • All National Governing Body assessment fees
  • All food and accommodation in single sex bunk bedded rooms, possibly shared – participants should be aged 18 or over
On booking, you will be required to pay a non refundable deposit of £200 with the balance due 6 weeks before the start of the course.

How does the programme work?

Our experienced, qualified instructional team will deliver coaching to give you enough experience to take part in the assessment course listed above. 

A typical day will start with breakfast followed by a short daily meeting.  A full day of coaching or un-coached practice time will follow with a review of the day and dinner on return to the centre. During an NGB course, there may be evening input from the visiting coach.

Abernethy operates 4 Christian adventure activity centres and a bunkhouse in Scotland along with a Swiss winter ski training base.  The School of Adventure Leadership is in its 20th year of operation and is home to our flagship one year fully residential Outdoor Instructor Training Course.  Module participants will be training alongside our residential students.

The Abernethy staff team are all Christians and are here to provide a comfortable, welcoming and memorable experience to all who visit. Our dependence is on God and prayer underpins everything we do. We are a charitable trust - with Christian values at the core of our service.  Course participants will be required to be sympathetic with our Christian ethos.  Module participants are invited to join our optional weekly evening team fellowship session.  Abernethy operates an on-site no smoking / no alcohol policy.
