"The week was fantastic and we cannot rate Dave and Elliot’s skill and attitude highly enough." Samantha Robertson, Paddling Adventure group
As a DofE Approved Activity Provider, Abernethy, with its AALS licences, has a great deal to offer the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award participants. We can provide a range of expeditions at all Award levels for groups:
We can provide your group with kit, including food and canoes, and we have DofE accredited supervisors and assessors to work with the groups to ensure they are equipped with the knowledge and skills to navigate through rural, open or wild country. Expeditions can take place from April to October and there should be a minimum of 5 participants per expedition.
We have the following expeditions happening in 2019:
If you are looking for a great start to your DofE expeditions, then come and join with others to complete your Bronze Walking expeditions with Abernethy Ardeonaig.
A good level of fitness and commitment to learning/developing your skills are a must. The Training day is a great start to your expedition experience and as well as meeting your Instructor and other participants will include: map reading and navigation skills, how to put up and take down tents, how to use stoves safely, filling in DofE Route Cards and what to do in case of an emergency. Progressive training will be included as part of the Practice expedition.
The prices above include: Supervision and/or Assessment by qualified Mountain Leaders from an organisation who are both an AAP with DofE and AALA Licenced as well as any campsite fees. Camping equipment can be hired for a small additional fee.
Open Bronze Walking Qualifying Expedition: Arrival at Abernethy Ardeonaig for 9:30am on Wednesday 07 August. Routes will be between Aberfeldy and Crieff.
Please ask us if you would like to stay the previous night before the expedition starts, for a small extra cost: e-mail us here.
If you are looking for a different way to complete your Gold expedition ‘journey’, then come and complete your Gold expeditions with Abernethy Ardeonaig via canoe.
Previous canoeing knowledge and experience would be an advantage but is not required. During the training day we will teach progressive basic canoeing skills and how to be safe on the water. Further skills input continues throughout the Practice expedition to ensure each individual participant is ready for their qualifying expedition. A good level of fitness and commitment to learning and developing your skills are essential.
The prices above include: Supervision and / or Assessment by 4* qualified coaches from an organisation who are both an AAP with DofE and AALA Licenced as well as all canoeing equipment and any campsite fees. A dry barrel and camping equipment can be hired for a small additional fee.
Open Gold Canoeing Training Day and Practice Expedition on Loch & River Tay: Arrival at Abernethy Ardeonaig for 9:30am on Saturday 13 July.
Open Gold Canoeing Qualifying Expedition on the Great Glen: Arrival at Fort William Train Station for 9:30am on Tuesday 06 August.
New for 2019 is an alternative way to complete your expedition — by bike!
Abernethy Barcaple are now able to run Duke of Edinburgh Mountain Biking Expeditions (practice and qualifying) for Bronze, Silver and Gold.
We’d recommend two days training prior to the practise expedition. This can be done in the same week as the practise or organised as a separate stay at Abernethy Barcaple: we can organise for our Instructors to deliver this training closer to you, according to your needs, rather than from our Barcaple Centre, hopefully saving you time!
A sample Training programme may look like:
Day 1 training
Day 2 training
Please contact Abernethy Barcaple on 01557 820261 or email us for further information, and to discuss your needs and for pricing details.
In order to help participants gel as a team and to get the most out of the expedition experience, participants will ideally book to complete both their Practice & Qualifying expeditions with Abernethy. If you are just looking for either a Practice or a Qualifying expedition there may be an option to add you to an expedition as long as the team numbers still fall within the DofE regulations of minimum and maximum numbers per expedition team. Please contact us with your requirements and we will let you know if we can help.
To enable these expeditions to go ahead, in line with DofE award guidelines, we need to have a minimum of 5 people signed up for each expedition and will not be able to confirm that they will go ahead until this is the case. Please contact us as soon as possible if you would like to be part of an expedition and we will be pleased to send you more information and timescales for preparing routes etc.
We sometimes run other Open DofE Expeditions throughout the year other than those listed above. Contact the Centres for dates and more information on both walking and canoe expeditions.
