The Abernethy Enterprise Challenge for Schools

This year we are inviting schools local to our Ardeonaig, Ardgour and Nethybridge centres to take part in The Abernethy Enterprise Challenge for Schools!  Participating schools will receive £25 to invest in starting up their own business.  They will have 5 weeks to launch and run their business idea, raising as much money as they can.  Check out our short film to find out more about it!

You can find links to the Registration and Completion forms below, or by following the links on the navigation bar on the left of the page.

Why take on The Abernethy Enterprise Challenge?

  • Taking part in the challenge will help enable other young people to come to Abernethy for an adventure of their own.  As a charity, Abernethy relies on supporters to enable the continuation and growth of the important work we do with young people in Scotland.  Our vision is to see young people live life to the full through shared outdoor adventures that inspire, encourage and equip.  We want as many young people as possible to have access to these life-impacting experiences.  That's why this year the Abernethy Enterprise Challenge will be raising money for two important causes.  Schools nearest to our Ardeonaig and Ardgour centres will be raising money for our Bursary Fund which supports young people whose financial circumstances would otherwise prevent them from coming to Abernethy.  Schools nearest to our Nethybridge centre will be raising money for The Courtyard Project.  This is a much needed new development at our Nethybridge centre which will provide wheelchair accessible accommodation and facilities as well as a better provision for all our groups.  (Check out the video below!)
  • Taking part in the challenge offers a unique and appealing educational experience for pupils with a very practical learning opportunity.  The challenge fits really well with the Curriculum for Excellence, engaging: numeracy skills; team work; and entrepreneurial skills.
  • In addition to these benefits we are offering two prizes which are detailed below, as a thank you for working hard to raise money for Abernethy.

Proceeds and Prizes

In addition to the educational benefits of the project, every school who takes part will have a chance to win one of two prizes.  The Merit Award will go to the school who impresses our judges the most.  They will be looking for evidence demonstrates an exceptional effort made by your pupils.  This might be shown through your innovative ideas, creativity in sourcing resources, strong teamwork or inclusivity of your community.  This will be a cash prize.  The Young Entrepreneurs Award will go to the school who raises the most money through their business.  This will be a non-residential activity day for the winning pupils at a nearby Abernethy centre.

The proceeds raised by schools nearest to our Ardeonaig and Ardgour centres will go towards Abernethy’s Bursary Fund.  The proceeds raised by schools nearest to our Nethybridge centre will go towards The Courtyard Project.  Both these causes will enable more young people to experience the benefits of outdoor education and adventures in the future.

Our Sponsors

We are enormously grateful to our sponsors AJC (Angus Jamieson Consulting) who provided the seed money to enable this challenge to go ahead.  AJC are a well-known and respected company within the Oil and Gas sector, based in Inverness.  They have several innovative technologies to their credit, develop strategic software, provide specialist training courses in drilling and surveying, and are frequently approached to assist as consultants on related projects all over the world.  Hart Insurance also got involed by sponsoring, and helping to judge, our Merit Award.  They were enourmously generous with £1000 gift going to the winning school!

Our sponsors are vital, enabling schools to participate and the challenge to go ahead.  There are still opportunities to get involved in our 2019 challenge.  If you/your business/anyone you know would be interested in sponsoring the challenge this year or in the future then we'd love to hear from you.  Just contact ruth.hutchison@abernethy.org.uk
