Trainee Instructor Course

What's it like?

Abernethy Trainee Instructor (TI) course is designed to kickstart your career to become an Outdoor Activity Instructor.

Join our 10-month full-time residential programme to grow in faith, develop your character, practice your soft skills and gain National Governing Body qualifications – all whilst living in Christian Community in the Cairngorms.

Following on from this course each trainee will have the opportunity to apply and continue with qualifications as a team member within the Abernethy instructional department.

It is this team environment which provides a great opportunity to reach your potential as an Outdoor Activity Instructor, whilst shadowing, working with and being trained and mentored by experienced team members.

Alongside being discipled, you will work towards set goals using a tailored development and training plan, which will further enhance your skills.

All applicants must be aged 18 or over at the start of the course.

Qualifications

During the Trainee Instructor Course you will have the opportunity to work towards the following qualifications:
  • 2 day Outdoor First Aid course
  • Archery GB instructor award
  • Child wellbeing & protection in Sport safeguarding course
  • BC Paddlesport Safety and Rescue Course
  • Selection of Personal performance paddlesport awards
  • BC Paddlesport Instructor
  • BC Core Coach Training
  • BC Paddlesport Leader Training
  • BC Paddlesport Leader Assessment
  • MLTB Summer Mountain Leader Training
  • Learn to Lead rock climbing course
  • MLTB Rock Climbing Instructor Training
  • British Cycling Trail Leader Award Training
  • British Cycling Trail Leader Award Assessment
  • BC Introduction to White Water Safety
  • Snowsports Scotland Level 1
  • Optional personal ski week alongside our instructional team [dependent on ski standard, additional cost TBC]
While every opportunity is given to complete all of these courses they are subject to candidates being at the required standard.
Course Cost

£9440 (TBC for 2027/28 course) Includes:

  • Accommodation – private room in shared accommodation
  • Full board – 3 meals a day
  • Bills – all utility costs including Wi-Fi
  • Instruction costs – course registration fees, training and regulating bodies’ assessment costs

Course Dates

Course full for 2026-27. We are currently reviewing how we improve the course further. Dates and prices for 2027-28 will be confirmed soon please use the application form to note your interest in the 27/28 intake.
